DIY Lamp Project

I saw a great lamp makeover idea on Pinterest and wanted to give it a shot. I see these awful brassy gold and "crystal" lamps at every thrift store and flea market- but with 20 minutes and a coat of paint they can be turned into a gorgeous new lamp. This one cost me only $4.99 and I already had the spray paint and shade.

Here are some great instructions: http://www.centsationalgirl.com/2009/06/crystal-de-light/

After a little rearranging over the holiday break, I'd share a few of my favorite design concepts in our home....

Parisian Chic

DIY Photobooth

For our annual Christmas party, I wanted to come up with something fun for my guests to make full use of our bite-size city condo. I thought that instead of having our bedroom go as unused space, I would turn it into a photobooth.

What you need:
1) 2-3 Metallic Door Curtains found at any party store (http://party.windycitynovelties.com/novelties/Metallic%20Door%20Curtain.html)
2) Camera + Tripod (Target)
3) Themed Props (Dollar Tree)
4) Photo editing program

What I did was hang 2 metallic curtains side-by-side over my drapes. Then I set up a tray on my bed with the tripod/camera already positioned and tons of holiday-inspired props. (Everything from garland to Santa hats to big bows to reindeer antlers....)

The best thing to do is buy a remote control for your camera so guests can just point and shoot, but since my camera wasn't compatible I pre-programmed a custom self timer so that each push of the button would result in 4 consecutive photos. It worked pretty well for the most part and after showing a few guests how to get started, the word quickly spread.

When the party is over and you've uploaded all photos, you can do the final editing. Some pictures may be a little crooked so you'll want to crop and enhance so they all look uniform. (Any basic photo editing program will be able to do this.) You can even mark each photo with a graphic or caption from what the event was if you're feeling extra ambitious.

Now I have some hilarious photos of all our friends and it also helped to maximize space. This will definitely be a new must-have for all our parties in the future. I'm thinking about using paper garland for the next big event to see how that works!

Winter Wonderland Tablescape

Tips for the perfect winter table setting:
1) Silver and Gold are the perfect alternatives to classic red and green.
2) Use lots of candles, sparkly ornaments and fresh flowers to make your table look and feel ultra glam.
3) Cut and glue leftover tinsel or garland onto skewers or cardstock for something sparkly in champagne glasses or as place cards.
4) Icy ghost chairs and cozy sheepskin from Ikea are perfect seating for a winter party. (I bought my chairs here: www.interiorexpressoutlet.com)
5) If you can't find a linen you like in the right size, don't be afraid to head to the bedding aisle. (Shh....This is a gray queen sized sheet!)

Fabulous Thrifty Bar

I've been on the hunt lately for something to fill up the tall thin wall next to our kitchen. Since we love entertaining, I thought what would be better than a bar?! After finding this $4 trunk at Salvation Army then the $12 wine rack from The Ark thrift store, I searched flikr and google for a royalty-free image to fill this frame from my mom (it was previously black but I gave it new life with a coat of gold paint). The printing only cost me $3 from Office Depot for a 24x36" print. Ask for a blueprint copy for the best pricing. Now we are all set to ring in the New Year! Cheers!

CHI Celeb-spoting: Tim Gunn with John Bartlett

(06.10.09) Designer John Bartlett and fashion plate/host Tim Gunn of Project Runway were in Chicago at Bucktown's hottest newest eatery, The Bristol. Bartlett has created a new men's line for Claiborne (available at Carson's) that totes the slogan, "Work in your play clothes. Play in your work clothes." Tim Gunn has been shaking up the fashion scene since he recently left Parson's to head the new Claiborne brands as chief creative director. (Isaac Mizrahi also recently ditched Target to sign up with the label.) Probably one of the nicest (and most stylish) guys ever!

A few words with Mr. Gunn...
  • Favorite thing to do in Chicago? "I love Chicago. The shopping is great and I like going to the museums. [The new Modern Wing] is on my list."
  • Did you know Christian was just here? "I know! It seems our paths just miss each other over and over."
  • Best places for men's shirts? "John Bartlett for Claiborne or Hugo Boss."

CHI Celeb-spotting: Christian Siriano

SPOTTED: Christian Siriano strutting down Oak St. June 5th.

I had to do a double-take at first but the hair, glasses and height were a dead giveaway. The Season 4 winner of Project Runway has a new line available at Intermix and Bonnie & Clyde's in Chicago. Just a few months back, Siriano was in Chicago showcasing his line with a fashion show at Lumen.

Another Project Runway star, Tim Gunn, will be making an appearance in Chicago this week at a private CS Magazine event. Stay tuned for the scoop! (Maybe he'll bring Christian along!)

CHI Celeb-spotting: Bullseye Bazaar

(4.29.09) A whole lot more than just garb and goods drew crowds at Target's Bullseye Bazaar in Chicago. Gossip Girl's Ed Westwick and Jessica Szohr, as well as Private Practice's Kate Walsh were in attendance at the 3 day pop-up store premier at the Tribune Tower.

The two femme fashionistas were just as sweet as they were fabulous!
A little know fact: Where did Kate get her signature auburn locks? From a bottle! Although she is a mix of Irish & Italian, she is a natural blond.

For the love of fashion...

Any girl older than 13 knows that Vera Wang is synonymous with weddings, so what else would a bride-to-be do but attend the Vera Wang/Belle Vie Bridal Couture fashion show at CS Brides' Evening of Bridal Luxury at the Four Seasons in Chicago? On display were Wang's trig threads fresh off the New York Bridal Market runways. And the trends? Color washes, texture and big bling all stole the show. Also shown were fanciful frocks by the likes of the ever-innovative Anne Barge, along with Amsale, Reem Acra and St. Pucchi.
