Here is a great site that shows you step-by-step (with pictures) how to apply faux lashes. It's so easy once you get the hang of it & they really add drama. For a more subdued look, trim the eyelash strip so that you are cutting off 1/3 to 1/2 of the lash that is closest to your nose - also the shorter end. Apply just the longer part to the outer corners. Eva Longoria swears by this trick & look what they've done for J Lo! Also, the best lash glue is sold at MAC and it actually is supposed to function as a bandage adhesive!
